5th Finger Flexor Tendon Sheath Ganglion Cyst: Orthopedic Case of the Day

5th finger flexor tendon ganglion cyst
Orthopedic case of the day:
5th finger flexor tendon sheath ganglion cyst.24 year old female recently started working as a fry cook. With the repetitive grasping, she developed some sharp pain at the base of her 5th finger. Pain has been progressive and she has noticed a small, hard lump on the palm near the base of the 5th finger.
Ultrasound imaging revealed a 3 millimeter cyst adjacent to the tendon consistent with a flexor tendon ganglion. After numbing the area, I poked a couple of holes in the cyst and then injected a touch of steroid. This treatment will resolve >50% of these cysts.
The tendon moves back and forth with passive range of motion of the finger. The cyst (black circle) is stationary.
