Knee Arthritis with Bone Marrow Lesion – Regenerative Orthopedic Case of the Week

SF is a 67 year old female with right knee pain. Symptoms began 18 months ago after a ski trip, but there was no specific injury. Gradually progressive lateral knee pain worse with stairs, squatting and getting up from a chair. Gel shot for arthritis performed by another doctor provided no relief.

I ordered an MRI which showed moderate arthritis in the lateral compartment of the knee with cartilage loss in addition to a notable area of bone swelling and damage. Areas of bone swelling and damage can be significant generators of pain and to treat them, you have to inject into the bone directly! (patients are asleep for that!)

After discussing treatment options, SF decided to proceed with adipose stem cell treatment into the joint to address the cartilage loss followed by PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) into the bone to alleviate the bone pain. Today, 3 months after treatment, her pain has decreased from 5.5/10 down to ZERO. She is back to climbing stairs and hiking without any pain!
