Lateral Thigh Numbness (Meralgia Paresthetica) Orthopedic Case of the Week
72 year old male with 10 year history of numbness over anterior and lateral right thigh. Symptoms have been intermittent and gradually progressive for years. Lumbar injections and physical therapy provided no significant improvement. His history and exam were consistent with meralgia paresthetica (entrapment of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve).
After discussing treatment options, he decided to have a nerve hydrodissection performed. This is a simple, ultrasound-guided, in-office injection directed around the nerve to expand the surrounding tissues and relieve the nerve compression.
Today, one month later, his symptoms are completely resolved. Accurate diagnosis and precise delivery of treatment are critical to success with any orthopedic issues.
