Regenerative Orthopedic Case of the Week: PRP for Quadriceps tendon partial tear

JJ is a 72 year male with right knee pain. Pain developed after sudden change in direction playing pickleball 7 months ago. Dull, aching anterior knee pain with stairs, squatting, lunging and getting up from a chair. Had to stop pickleball due to pain. Minimal improvement with 6 wks of physical therapy and 5 rounds of shockwave.

MRI imaging revealed 40% partial-thickness tear of the quadriceps tendon. On MRI, normal tendon is black, the bright area is the tear. After discussing treatment options, he decided to have PRP (platelet rich plasma) injection treatment. Today, 3 months out from treatment, he is 95% better and back to pickleball without pain symptoms. Only having minimal pain with deep squats and ladders.
