STUDY: Uncultured Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) Outperform Cultured Stem Cells for Knee Arthritis

Outside the USA, particularly in Central America and the Caribbean, many clinics culture expand stem cells and inject these MSCs for orthopedic issues or administer them through an IV. These cultured MSC treatments can cost 10’s of thousands of dollars. However, a recent meta-analysis publication evaluating 17 published articles involving 767 patients concluded that “culture expansion of autologous MSCs is not a necessary factor to obtain superior results in the management of knee osteoarthritis. Moreover, while using uncultured autologous MSCs, we recommend MSCs of adipose origin to obtain superior functional outcomes.”

I’ve been performing autologous adipose (fat derived) MSC treatments for knee arthritis since 2014 with notable success and at significantly less expense that culture-expanded MSC treatments.
